evolution
as my understanding of what the web should be evolves along with the reality of what the web can be, this site is evolving too.
the web is a way to exchange information in a changing world. as the world changes, it's only natural that the web should change as well. i'm not just talking about more flash, or better ads, but also the role the web plays in people's daily lives. mapquest has already changed the way people find their way around. the satellite photos at google maps imply that the same kind of change is coming to the way we look at the world.
the banner image and the color scheme for this page should change each time you reload it. in a way, instant gratification is the most addictive thing about the web- something new and exciting could be waiting for you, just one click away. but you'll never know unless you click. you are the 100th visitor, you may already be a winner, click here to redeem your prize.
the effect is accomplished using css and a little perl script that apache runs as a server-side include. you can select stylesheets by name if you are using a non-IE browser, but if you're using IE, just clicking reload repeatedly will eventually let you see all the headers. If you haven't already done so, you owe it to yourself to click on over to the mozilla foundation and give firefox a shot. if you're already using opera or a mozilla-based browser, you can view and select from the different styles available. in the future i will add more images and color schemes, and maybe i'll learn to use cookies so the site can remember your favorite style.
inspiration came from the css zen garden, from eric meyer's complexspiral demo, and from the kind folks at malachiarts. if you want something from the old index.html, it's still here.
